LEATHER JOURNAL WITH WATERCOLOR DETAILS
One of my favorite handmade books to date, this watercolor journal was a custom order for a Mother's Day gift. This leather notebook was created for my friend's mom, who is a painter. (As an artist, I get immeasurable joy from making books for other artists.) Besides the request for a leather cover, Nic gave me free reign.
The inside contains 160 hand-torn pages that create a lovely deckled edge. The cover sheet and signature protectors are all made from paper that I watercolored myself. The longstitch binding allows the book to lie flat for comfort and ease of writing. I sent Nic a video of the book before he got to see it in person and he responded, "That's so beautiful I want to cry." I like to think it was not a hyperbole. His mom also loves her new journal and said:
"It's perfect, it's perfect— how did she know?!" -Marian, Columbia TN
The secret is in asking the right questions! That, and sneaking a peek at his mother's artwork so that I was familiar with her style and tastes. The entire color scheme was inspired by one of her beautiful paintings. I still want to recreate this journal for myself every time I see pictures of it!
